Teaching Assistants


Positions available:

We are seeking casual Teaching Assistants for our supply pool.

Teaching Assistants provide support to special needs students who are either physically/ developmentally challenged or who have identified behavioural difficulties.  They work with these special needs children in a classroom setting, either in a regular classroom or in a “contained” classroom.

Casual Teaching Assistants work on an “as needed” basis, filling in for staff who are away or on leave.  Assignments vary from one or two days up to one year.  Permanent positions, when available, are posted internally to the attention of all casual Teaching Assistants. 

Teaching assistants work during the school year only.  There will be school shut down periods at Christmas, March Break, and during the summer months when teaching assistants do not work and are not paid.

 

Qualifications:

All Teaching Assistants working in Peel require the appropriate degree/diploma (E.g. Psychology Degree; B.A.- Exceptionality in Human Learning; Sociology Degree; CYW – Child and Youth Worker; Community and Justice Diploma; Corrections Worker Diploma; DDW – Developmental Disabilities Worker; DSW – Developmental Service Worker; EA – Educational Assistant; Post ECE Advanced Studies in Special Needs; RN – Registered Nurse; RPN – Registered Practical Nurse; SSW – Social Service Worker; Community Worker Program; Bachelor of Applied Science – Child, Youth and Family; Behaviour Science Technology; Autism and Behavioural Science).  Transcripts may be requested to support relevant course detail.

Experience in working with special needs children is essential and school-based experience is a definite asset. Candidates must also be able to perform the essential physical duties of the positions, such as lifting and transferring children and equipment.

All School Board employees require a Criminal Record Check (executed within the previous 6 months) prior to commencing employment.
