Travel Assistants

What is a travel assistant?

Travel assistants accompany special needs students as they travel to and from school on the bus and ensure their safe transportation. Students may have significant health/medical and/or behavioural needs.

Who can be a travel assistant? What qualifications do you need?

We're looking for travel assistants with the following skills and qualities:

  • experience or interest in supporting children with health and behaviour needs
  • willingness to work with students with different capabilities
  • ability to work with students with different cultural and language backgrounds

What will the travel assistants do?

As a travel assistant, you'll help students travel safely from their home to school and back again on their method of transportation.

Where are the travel assistants needed?

We need many travel assistants in schools in the municipalities of Brampton, Caledon and  Mississauga.

How much time is involved?

Travel assistants will generally work two hours per day (one hour before school and one hour after school) during the school year from September to June.

What are the benefits of being a travel assistant?

As a travel assistant, you will earn $12.60 an hour plus 4% vacation pay (as of September 1, 2009).

How can you apply?

Since this is a casual position that works on-call, on a day-to-day basis during the school year (September to June), Travel Assistants must live within a reasonable distance to the school. Travel Assistants must re-apply each year.

Travel Assistants are hired by the schools directly. Interested candidates should contact the school within your surrounding neighbourhood to inquire if there are any opportunities. Applicants should submit a covering letter and resume outlining why you would like to be a Travel Assistant, your experience and/or your interest in working with children with Special Needs.

We appreciate the interest of all applicants, but will only be interviewing selected candidates. For the safety of students, successful candidates will be required to submit a satisfactory criminal record check prior to the commencement of any employment duties.  Recent changes made by the RCMP have resulted in significant processing delays for some candidates.  You may wish to start the process to obtain your criminal record check as soon as possible.
