Special presentation
Shari Lynn Ladanchuk, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Peel, presented the Scholastic Partnership Award to the Peel District School Board.
Delegations
Catherine Soplet delegated the board regarding Mississauga Summit 2011.
Raj Anand, Varinder Sharma and Mahzulfah Uppal delegated the board regarding the proposed boundary for Castlebrooke Secondary School.
Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion congratulates board chair on school naming
The board received a letter of congratulations from Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion on the occasion of the naming of Hartsdale Avenue Public School for board chair Janet McDougald. In the letter, McCallion notes, "You are to be commended for these outstanding achievements and for your fervent commitment and dedication to education. You have made a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of students over the years and have helped to ensure that the Peel District School Board continues to provide quality education and a positive learning environment for both faculty and students alike."
Director updates board on hiring for diversity
Director of education Tony Pontes reported on the board's progress regarding hiring for diversity. Board Policy #54 – Equity and Inclusive Education, was approved in September 2010 and affirms the board's long-standing commitment to "an equitable education system that upholds and reflects the principles of fair and inclusive education, which should permeate all policies, programs, policies of operations."
The board is also "committed to maintaining, developing and expanding collaborative relationships with parents, family members and diverse communities that support system and school improvement."
Within the policy, it is a guiding principle for the board to "recruit, hire, train and promote staff who reflects the diversity of the community. The board will work to remove any barriers to ensure fair, equitable and transparent employment practices, for all staff at every level."
Director Pontes reported that these commitments and principles support and guide the board's strategic plan, the board's Report Card for Student Success, and the goals to achieve equity and to attract, develop and retain a diverse staff of committed, dedicated and caring people.
Elementary principal assignment
The board approved the following elementary principal assignment, effective Jan. 9, 2012:
Jill Ott from principal at Carberry Public School to school effectiveness leader.
