City of Mississauga commemorates Peel board teacher for preserving wetlands area

 

Cathy Standring, school support officer – leadership, was honoured by having a walkway named after her in O’Connor Park in Mississauga. “Cathy’s Walkway” recognizes her collaboration with dedicated staff, school council members and students from Ruth Thompson Middle School to preserve a wetlands area in O’Connor park.

 

Peel board kicks off United Way campaign

 

The Peel board's 2011-12 United Way campaign will kick off on Oct. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the HJA Brown Education Centre. United Way chair Michelle Stubbings, principal at Meadowvale Secondary School, Carol Speers, superintendent of education, Norm Black, principal at McKinnon Public School and Susan Kulkarni, resource development manager at United Way of Peel, presented the campaign plan to the board.

The board acknowledged the hard work and effort that is put in by the Peel board volunteer United Way committee. Vice-chair Nurse also spoke to the support and hard work put in by staff and students at schools across Peel.

Peel board recognizes Oct. 5, 2011 as Teacher Recognition Day

 

The board formally acknowledged that Oct. 5 be adopted as Teacher Recognition Day in Peel. Formally declared 'United Nations World Teachers' Day' the Peel board highlights this day with the following formal proclamation:

 

"Whereas October 5 is United Nations World Teachers' Day; and whereas Peel District School Board trustees unanimously proclaimed October 5 as Teacher Recognition Day in Peel with the theme "Quality Teachers for Quality Education"; and whereas Peel schools play a pivotal role in shaping the future for students; and whereas Peel students benefit everyday from the efforts of Peel staff; and whereas Peel schools and learning centres stand for educational excellence, thanks to the work done by Peel staff; and whereas Peel staff, through their contribution to the education of young people, play a major role in our development as a community, province and nation – Be it resolved that Teacher Recognition Day is our way of saying well done and thank you."

 

Schools and parents across the Peel board will participate in various activities to acknowledge teachers' contributions on this day.

 

Delegation

 

Ravinder Singh spoke to trustees regarding bussing distance for grade 7 and 8 students to Greenbriar Senior Public School.

Parents from Fernforest Public School delegated to board regarding student transportation to Fernforest Public School.

Catherine Soplet delegated the board regarding the Mississauga Summit.

 

Trustees approve Mission: Refresh Working Group

 

Trustees agree to organize a working group to revise the mission, vision and values of the Peel board. Members of the working group will be decided at the next board meeting on Oct. 11.

 

Board approves addition to Bramalea Secondary School to accommodate the Truck and Coach program

 

Trustees approved a tender for an addition and renovation for Bramalea Secondary School to Everstrong Construction Ltd. at a cost of $2.2 million, including HST. The addition consists of a new single-storey building with two classroom areas, four truck service bays and associated ancillary support rooms.  Renovations to the existing building will provide a direct corridor to the Truck and Coach building. 

 

Tender for new school construction receives approval from the board

 

The tender for the construction of Fletcher’s South Junior Public School was awarded to Remo General Contracting Ltd., at a cost of $11.6 million, including HST.

Elementary enrolment grows in Peel

 

As of September 12, 2011, the Peel District School Board had 97,818.5 full-time equivalent elementary students. This represents a growth of 438.5 full-time equivalent elementary students from September 2010 to September 2011.

The original 2011-12 enrolment projection of 99,465.5 full-time equivalent elementary students is being reduced to 98,915.5. This represents a decrease from the original 2011-12 elementary projection of 550.0 full-time equivalent elementary students.

 

Retirements

 

Trustees recognized the contributions and years of service of the following staff who are retiring:

 

Neville James, custodian, will retire Jan. 1, 2012

Dennis Kack, head custodian, will retire Jan. 1, 2012

Gwendolyn Kidd, teacher, retired May 31, 2011

Stanislaw Kurpaska, custodian, will retire Nov. 1

Ivy Smaller, custodian, retired Sept. 9

Rosalba Zuccaro, head custodian, will retire Sept. 30

Lynn Hiebert, superintendent of human resources support services, will retire Oct. 31
