Board Highlights

Mississauga Arts Council makes special presentation to board

The Mississauga Arts Council presented the board with two flutes in memory of Amy Doolittle, a flutist and strong advocate for the arts who passed away in 2009. The flutes were purchased with donations made to the Mississauga Arts Council in Doolittle's memory. The flutes will be provided to two schools identified using the board's Social Risk Index.

School Food Action Coalition aims to introduce more local food in Peel board cafeterias

Stephanie Crocker, associate director of EcoSource, and Lea Ann Mallett, executive director of EcoSource, presented to the board about the School Food Action Coalition. The coalition is the first of its kind in Ontario and was established during the pilot year of the School Food and Beverage Policy to identify existing and new opportunities for students to support local food purchasing in cafeterias, at the same time as increasing the healthy options available. The coalition will track student behaviour to see if knowing food in the cafeteria is local impacts students’ decisions.

Last spring the coalition held a cooking contest that challenged student teams to design menus that were both compliant with the School Food and Beverage Policy and that highlighted local food items. The winning menu is available in cafeterias this fall. A video about the contest and other aspects of the project is available on YouTube on the Peel board’s channel called PeelSchools.

The coalition is made up of representatives from EcoSource, the Peel board, Peel Public Health and Chartwells.
