Board honours paralympic athlete

The board honoured Curtis Thom, grade 12 student at West Credit Secondary School and a participant at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens last summer. Curtis set a new Canadian record in one of his races.

Arnott Charlton school honoured for excellence in physical education, art

The Canadian Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance has recognized Arnott Charlton Public School with its Diamond Award for quality daily physical education. The school is also the recipient of the Arts Alive Award 2004 for its quality arts program. The award-winning school receives $500 to support its arts program.

Board receives update from Mississauga Traffic Safety Council

David Brown, chair of the Mississauga Traffic Safety Council, provided an update to trustees about the work of the council during the year. An important event each year is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in June to honour the 198 crossing guards in Mississauga. The traffic safety council will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2005.

Peel board reports on use of provincial Learning Opportunity Grant

The Peel District School Board has received $10.9 million in funding through the provincial Learning Opportunity Grant. The board has allocated this increased funding to support the following initiatives:

  • $4.2 million will support the Pathways Schools program, strategically supporting the schools in the communities with the highest social risk with programs such as early years hubs, readiness centres, literacy coaches and math teachers
  • $1.9 million for at-risk resources
  • $1.5 for the new learning technologies strategy

Board recognizes Canadian Healthy Workplace Week, Oct. 25 to 31

The Peel District School Board will recognize Canadian Healthy Workplace Week, Oct. 25 to 31, in the following ways:

  • applying for the National Quality Institute Healthy Workplace Certification, Levels 2 and 3
  • recognizing staff and work locations who model healthy lifestyles through the Wellness Champion and Healthy School/Healthy Workplace contests
  • encouraging all schools and worksites to talk about and take action on creating a healthier workplace.

Board approves tender for construction of new junior school in Springdale

The tender for construction of Springdale Central #2 Junior Public School was awarded to Bondfield Construction Ltd., at a cost of $6.5 million.

Chief social worker receives provincial award

Dana Riddell, chief social worker for the Peel board, has been recognized with the OASW School Social Work Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the social work profession and her ability to empower people to create change for the betterment of children and their families. The award will be presented at the School Social Work Symposium on Oct. 29.

 

Retirements

Trustees recognized the contributions and years of service of the following staff who are retiring:

John Cruickshank, superintendent of education will retire Dec. 31
Wayne Roe, building leadhand, will retire Mar. 31, 2005
Penelope Sear, teacher, will retire Feb. 28, 2005
