Board Highlights

Board approves new secondary education pre-service program

The board has approved a new secondary pre-service program at Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School beginning in September 2003 when the new school is open. The three-year pilot project will be developed in partnership with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT). This project will allow the board to continue its commitment to providing professional learning opportunities for teacher candidates from a variety of teaching faculties. The program will begin with a cohort of 30 teacher candidates and a staff of three OISE/UT professors. The teacher candidates will have the opportunity to be part of the opening of a new secondary school.

Board approves changes to policies

As part of the board's regular review process, the board policies were reviewed by the administration and the Trustee Review Committee. As a result of that review, the board approved the following policy changes:

  • revisions will be made to policies 24, 27, 28, 31, 48 and 49
  • policy 68 will be replaced
  • policies 2, 50, 53 and 57 will be deleted
  • minor "housekeeping" changes will be made to the remaining policies

For copies of the policies, call 905-890-1010, ext. 2011.

Board initiates community consultation on Heart Lake SS and Fletcher's Meadow accommodation plan

There are currently 1,856 students enrolled at Heart Lake Secondary School requiring 14 portables on site. If no action is taken to redirect students from Heart Lake, the enrolment for September 2003 could be 2,450 students requiring an additional 23 portables, bringing the total portable count to 37. The board will initiate a community consultation around the implementation of the redirection of all grades 9 and 10 students living in the redirected area to Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School. This change will be effective for the 2003-2004 school year.

The board will address the proposed accommodation plan at a supplementary board meeting on Wednesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. For an opportunity to delegate the board on this issue, contact Marion Smith in the Director's Office at 905-890-1010, ext. 2011.
