Sunny View Middle School student receives Wild Water Kingdom scholarship
Nicole McDonald, a grade 8 student at Sunny View Middle School in Brampton, is the 2009-10 recipient of the Wild Water Kingdom Scholarship worth $7,500 for her academic achievement and contributions to the life of her school.
Peel board kicks off United Way campaign
The Peel board's 2010-11 United Way campaign will kick off on Oct. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the HJA Brown Education Centre. United Way chair Margaret Harnarine-Ali, principal, Birchbank Public School, campaign vice-chair Michelle Stubbings, principal at Meadowvale Secondary School, and Susan Kulkarni, resource development manager from United Way of Peel Region, presented the campaign plan to the board.
The board acknowledged the hard work and effort that is put in by the Peel board volunteer United Way committee. Chair McDougald also spoke to the support and hard work put in by staff and students at schools across Peel.
This year, the Peel board's goal is to raise $325,000. Board employees are encouraged to donate a toonie a pay to the cause or organize fundraising activities at their school or workplace. Peel Student Presidents’ Council presents quarterly report
Representatives from the Peel Student Presidents’ Council (PSPC) provided an update to the board of trustees about recent activities of the council, including an upcoming Connections conference on Oct. 18. Visit the PSPC website—www.thepspc.com—for more information about the council.

Peel board recognizes regional scholarship, award winners
The board congratulated 38 Peel graduates who were selected as this year's regional scholarship and award winners. The following students were presented with scholarships and awards at their schools' commencement ceremonies:

Peel board recognizes Oct. 5, 2010 as Teacher Recognition Day
The board formally acknowledged that Oct. 5 be adopted as Teacher Recognition Day in Peel. Formally declared 'United Nations World Teachers' Day' the Peel board highlights this day with the following formal proclamation:
"Whereas October 5 is United Nations World Teachers' Day; and whereas Peel District School Board trustees unanimously proclaimed October 5 as Teacher Recognition Day in Peel with the theme "Quality Teachers for Quality Education"; and whereas Peel schools play a pivotal role in shaping the future for students; and whereas Peel students benefit everyday from the efforts of Peel staff; and whereas Peel schools and learning centres stand for educational excellence, thanks to the work done by Peel staff; and whereas Peel staff, through their contribution to the education of young people, play a major role in our development as a community, province and nation – Be it resolved that Teacher Recognition Day is our way of saying well done and thank you."
Schools and parents across the Peel board will participate in various activities to acknowledge teachers' contributions on this day.
Board approves differentiated implementation, staged implementation of balanced calendar
The board approved the implementation of the balanced calendar be differentiated and staged to meet the needs of three types of schools:
new K-8 schools or an elementary family of schools, e.g. two K-5 schools and a 6-8 school – resulting from increased enrolment or an Accommodation Review Committee
new secondary schools (grades 9 to 12) – resulting from increased enrolment or an Accommodation Review Committee
existing schools – K-5, K-6, K-8, 6-8, 7-8, 9-12, 7-12
Any school(s) implementing the balanced calendar will be identified through the board’s Annual Planning Document.
Board approves development of operating procedure to support implementation of balanced calendar
The board approved that an operating procedure be developed for existing schools that wish to implement the balanced calendar for use in the 2012 Annual Planning Document process. In order to adequately develop this process, a report regarding the potential impact of a balanced calendar model on existing programs will be brought to the Instructional Programs/Curriculum Committee by June 2011.
Peel board elementary enrolment grows
Peel board elementary enrolment for the start of the 2010-11 school year is about 107,000—a growth rate of 1.18 per cent.

Trustees recognized the contributions and years of service of the following staff who are retiring:
