Trustees honour graduates from adult education program

Four graduating students from the adult education program have been honoured with Trustee Awards for their high academic achievement. The scholarship will assist these adult learners in their plans to continue their education at the post secondary level.

  • Vasim Mohamed Hanif graduated with an average of 89 per cent and will study health sciences at McMaster University.
  • Melanie Linkletter-Mercieca graduated with an 87 per cent average and plans to study nursing.
  • Rolando Magadia, who graduated with an 80 per cent average, will attend Humber College in the fall.
  • Anna Salitra graduated with an average of 86 per cent and will study business administration at Sheridan College.

There are more than 3,000 adult learners working towards their high school diploma in the adult daytime and evening programs. The adult class of 2006 totalled 250 at the graduation ceremony on June 22, and another 30 to 40 students are expected to graduate at the end of the summer.

Board receives preliminary revenue overveiw

Rani Dhaliwal, controller of finance, provided a preliminary overview of the grants for the Peel board. The operating revenue for the Peel board will increase by $66 million or 6.7 per cent. That increase is due mainly to enrolment growth, salary increase and primary class size reduction. The Peel board's relative position with other boards similar to that of last year, it is the third lowest in Ontario on a per student funding basis.

Dhaliwal also pointed out that the transportation grant for 2006-07 is $9. 5 million less than expected busing costs.

The board's public meeting to finalize the budget is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 23.
