Special presentations

Harry Chamourian, vice-principal of Peel's Adult Education Centre, and students Renete Racheva, Ahlam Abuali and Fatmire Feka made a special presentation to the board regarding the Adult ESL program. The students shared their stories of achievement and thanked the board for its high-quality adult ESL program.

Unicef Canada's Jackie Jones thanked the board for it's donation of over $37,000 to support Unicef's relief efforts in Myanmar following the cyclone. Jones shared the organization's gratitude for the continued support of Peel board staff and students.

Board congratulates recipients of CFUW Mississauga University Entrance Awards

The board congratulated the following three graduating students who were selected by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) to receive a CFUW Mississauga University Entrance Award valued at $2,000:

Jing Ru (Cherry) Li, The Woodlands School

Elizabeth Pollen, Cawthra Park Secondary School

Ashley Yoannou, John Fraser Secondary School

Board congratulates recipients of Mississauga Kiss & Ride Volunteer Awards

 

The board congratulated the staff, students and volunteers at Tomken Road Middle School and Marvin Heights Public School on being selected by the Mississauga Traffic Council to receive a School Zone Safety (Kiss & Ride) Volunteer Award for 2007-08. The award honours the schools' strong commitment to the Kiss & Ride program. Both schools will receive a $250 cheque to be used for a school safety initiative that will directly benefit students.

Trustee Green appointed to vice-president, OPSBA Central West Region

At the Ontario Public School Boards' Association's (OPSBA) Annual General Meeting on June 14, 2008, Trustee David Green was appointed to the position of vice-chair for OPSBA's Central West Region. Trustee Green will also serve as the alternate representative on the Education Program Work Group.

Pauline Saunders delegated the board regarding the proposed new Regional Programs Policy.  

Board approves amendments to the Special Education Plan

 

The board approved recommended amendments to the 2007-08 Special Education Plan to be included in the 2008-09 Special Education Plan. For a full copy of the plan, visit www.peelschools.org in the 'Parents Boost Learning' section.

Graduates of Adult Education Program receive Peel District School Board Trustee Awards

 

On Thursday, June 19, 2008, the Peel District School Board Adult Education Trustee Awards were presented to four students graduating from the Adult Education Programs who are planning to further their education at the post secondary level. The award recipients for the 2007-08 school year are:

Mohammednoor Shaikh

Manju Trehan

Milena Malinowska

Natasha Maldeniya

The 2008 graduating class totalled 231 students and another 40 to 50 more graduates are expected to complete their diploma requirements in the summer program.

Board approves recommendations of Regional Program Review Committee

 

Following more than a year of research and evaluation, the board-established Regional Program Review Committee presented a report to the board which recommended the creation of a new Regional Program Policy, the establishment of a Regional Program Steering Committee and revisions to the existing Creative Learning Choices Policy #64. The board approved the recommendations.

 

The Regional Programs Review Committee was established on April 10, 2007 to review the guidelines for the placement and size of regional programs and to determine the impact on students who live in the elementary and secondary attendance areas for regional program.  

Board approves recommendation regarding Extended French Program at Lorne Park Secondary School

The board approved a recommendation from the Regional Program Committee to have staff prepare an analysis of the program implications of having the Extended French program as a stand-alone program at Lorne Park Secondary School verses locating the program with the French Immersion program at Clarkson Secondary School and report back to the Instructional Programs/Curriculum Committee by the end of November 2008. Following the analysis, staff will consider appropriate boundary changes, if necessary, in the Annual Planning Document process for possible implementation in September 2009, at the earliest.

 

Board appointed trustees to OPSBA Board of Directors

The board appointed Trustee David Green and Trustee Rick Williams to the Ontario Public School Boards' Association Board of Directors for June 2008 to June 2009. Trustee Arnold-Judge and Trustee Ford were appointed as alternates.

Tenders awarded for construction of school additions and renovations

 

The board approved the following tenders for construction of school additions and renovations:

Hawkins & Gadsby Construction was awarded the tender for construction of an addition and renovations to Floradale Public School in the amount of $3.64 million.

 

Aquicon Construction Ltd. was awarded the tender for the construction of an addition to Kindree Public School in the amount of $3.45 million.

 

Jasper Construction Corp. was awarded the tender for the construction of an addition to Vista heights Public School in the amount of $7.27 million.

 

Struct-Con Construction Ltd. was awarded the tender for the construction of an addition to Kingswood Drive Public School in the amount of $4.07 million.

 

Struct-Con Construction Ltd. was also awarded the tender for the construction of an addition to Sir John A Macdonald Senior Public School in the amount of $3.07 million.

Superintendent appointment and assignments

 

The board approved the following superintendent appointments effective August 5, 2008:

Rebecca Crouse, from Coordinating Principal (Secondary), Curriculum & Instruction Support Services, to Superintendent of Education – Alternative Programs

Carol Speers, from Principal, Chinguacousy Secondary School (Springdale North S.S.), to Superintendent of Education for Erindale, John Fraser, Meadowvale, Rick Hansen, Stephen Lewis, Streetsville, West Credit and The Woodlands Secondary Schools.

 

The board approved the following candidates to be considered for promotion to superintendent, as vacancies occur:

 

Mark Haarmann, Staffing Officer (Employee Relations)

Louise Sirisko, Principal, Nahani Way Public School

 

Secondary Principal appointments and assignments

 

The board approved the following secondary principal appointment, effective September 2, 2008:

 

Elaine Topping from principal at Bramalea S.S. to principal at Gordon Graydon Memorial S.S.

The board approved the following secondary principal appointment, effective September 22, 2008:

 

Linda Galen from principal at Harold Brathwaite S.S. to principal at Springdale North S.S.

Elementary vice-principal appointments and assignments

The board approved the following elementary vice-principal appointments, effective September 2, 2008:

 

Joyce Cairns from .5 vice-principal at Caledon East P.S. and .5 vice-princpal at Mountain Ash P.S. to .5 vice-principal at Caledon East P.S. and .5 vice-principal at Belfountain P.S./Alton P.S.

Retirements

Trustees recognized the contributions and years of service of the following staff who are retiring effective June 30 unless otherwise indicated:
