This event will give English Language Learners (ELL) and newcomer students the unique opportunity to explore their identity, question who they are and examine what it means to “be Canadian”. By bringing together diverse youth across Peel region, students will be given a platform to share their ideas and discuss how their identity and youth culture is portrayed and represented in the media, their own peer groups, schools, and families.
Through student-led presentations, engaging group discussions, interactive role-play and games, students will be empowered to:
- Question, challenge and examine attitudes and biases that label individuals as ‘other’
- Foster pride in their identity
- Interact with youth across their school board
- Acquire skills that promote social justice, equity and attitudinal change
- Explore their leadership potential
In addition, students will receive educational tools and leadership strategies to actively and proactively respond to such issues in their respective social and educational environments.
Middle schools are invited to bring up to 5 students and secondary schools are invited to bring up to 15 students.. Register online before Oct. 31 by clicking the link below and filling out the information. Please ensure students bring their own lunch, as it will not be provided at the event. If you wish to bring more students, please fill out the overflow registration and you will be contacted after Oct. 31 if space is available. Student permission forms must be returned to the school before the event. Supply coverage and transportation not provided. Light refreshments and snacks will be available in the morning.
The presentation and workshops will be led by Harmony Movement, a group that empowers youth to become leaders for social change by implementing diversity education in schools and communities.
