Keep your teen interested in school
These are helpful tips that can be applied to even the best students:
- Talk about your own experiences in school, mentioning both good and bad points.
- Talk with your teen every day about his day at school. Specific questions, such as, "What was the most interesting thing you learned today?" will generate more discussion than a general "How was school today?"
- Make your child aware of available study materials at home and at the library.
- Provide a suitable environment for your teen to do her schoolwork.
- Look for ways to boost your teen’s confidence and build self-esteem through positive reinforcement.
- Together, set guidelines for watching television and using the phone.
- Teach your teen about her ethnic, cultural and faith background.
- If you have questions about your teen’s progress, contact the school to set up a meeting with your teen’s teacher or the principal.
- Find community resources that provide parent support groups and information on effective parenting strategies.
