What you should know about immunization-a guide for parents
Kindergarten is a big step for children and an exciting time for parents. Having the right information at registration time can ease the transition for you and your child when school starts.
When you register your child for kindergarten, you will be asked for information on your child's immunization. Immunization is a series of needles that protect your child from harmful diseases.
If the school doesn't receive your child's immunization information or an exemption form, your child will not be admitted to class.
Why does the school need this information?
The school sends the immunization information to Peel Health for their records. Parents are required to provide this information under the Immunization of School Pupils Act to increase the protection of all children against designated diseases. Immunizing your child is the safest and most effective way to prevent serious childhood diseases.
When your child has a booster shot, please provide this information to Peel Health by calling the Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700.
What information should I bring?
- your child's Ontario Health Card
- a photocopy of your child's immunization record
What does my child need?
To register your child in kindergarten, you will need to bring written proof that your child was immunized against: diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (German measles). Pertussis is also recommended but not mandatory for school entry.
What if my child isn't immunized?
Please call the Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700 if:
- your child isn't immunized because of medical reasons or because of conflicts of conscience or religion to obtain the required forms
- your child doesn't have an Ontario Health Card Number and you cannot afford a doctor's services for immunization
Where can I get more information?
For more information on all vaccines and schedules for young children, students and parents, call the Health Line Peel at 905-799-7700.
