Conference helps parents 'make a difference in literacy and beyond'


2008 Parent Literacy conference

The Peel board hosted a one-day conference on Saturday, March 29, 2008 for parents of elementary and secondary school students in Peel. Make a difference in literacy and beyond – practical ways parents can boost learning features sessions by leading experts who will provide helpful tips and ideas on supporting students in literacy and beyond at home. The conference was co-presented by MDG Computers Canada Inc. and made possible by a grant from the Ontario Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat.

Parents took one day to:

  • experience a powerful keynote presentation by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka
  • choose from a number of practical workshops
  • meet other Peel parents
  • explore valuable publishers' displays
  • learn from some of our own educators – recognized throughout Ontario as experts in literacy

Each workshop is designed for a certain age group—primary, junior, middle, secondary or all. This free conference is open to all Peel District School Board parents. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Mississauga Secondary School which is located at 550 Courtney Park Drive West in Mississauga. Event sponsors include: CIBC, Friends of the Mississauga Library, Rogers Communications, Elemetary Teachers' Federation of Ontario, Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation and Starbucks.
