Parents and children learn and play at Malton family event June 21

Young children and their parents can spend the first full day of summer playing and learning together at a family event on June 21 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in Malton.

Hosted by the Understanding the Early Years Malton Guiding Collaborative, the event is free for families. "This event is designed to combine family fun with parenting education," says Helene Burrowes, a member of the guiding collaborative and one of the event organizers. "This family event is one of the ways that the UEY Malton Guiding Collaborative is working to support families and healthy early childhood development."

The event includes the following highlights:

  • informative presentations for parents about early literacy, school readiness, play and nutrition
  • entertainment by singer Wajid Khan and bhangra dancers Nach Day Punjabi
  • activities for children, including face painting, crafts and puzzles
  • an opportunity to pick up information and speak to representatives from more than 20 community agencies that serve families and young children

UEY Malton is a three-year community-led project to complete research about the factors that influence early childhood development. Formally launched in February, the project also focuses on community empowerment and capacity building. Funded by Human Resources and Social Development Canada, the project is governed by a group of Malton community leaders and advocates. Malton is one of 16 communities across Canada selected for this national project.

The family event will take place at the Malton Community Centre, 3540 Morning Star Dr. For more information about Understanding the Early Years Malton, go to www.maltonkids.ca or call 905-890-1010 ext. 2851.
