Peel District School Board scholars score 99.7 per cent, tie for top honours

Two Turner Fenton Secondary School students tied for the highest academic average among Peel students with 99.7 per cent. Young-Hae Cho and Sapna Mehta are among the Peel board's 2,187 Ontario scholars. To become an Ontario scholar, grade 12 students must have an average of 80 per cent or higher in their top six grade 12 courses.

"Hard work and determination are key to the success of any student," explains Cho. "I had to work hard this year from beginning to end. I was determined to succeed academically and to chart the course for my future along the way. "In September, Cho will head to the University of Toronto to study psychology.

Mehta will also be attending the University of Toronto this fall. She will study industrial engineering. As she reflects on the past year and on her academic success, Mehta says that she had a little fun along the way, "It was a challenge for me to balance the demands of academics with extracurricular events. I enjoyed my involvement with the senior wind ensemble, fundraising activities and student awareness campaigns."

Cho and Mehta are students of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Turner Fenton in Brampton. IB is a pre-university course of studies offered during the last two years of secondary school. Developed to prepare bright, highly motivated students for an internationally-recognized university entrance, this program offers comprehensive curriculum that challenges the whole student beyond the traditional realm of the secondary school experience. All students of the IB program are required to engage in the study of languages, sciences, mathematics and humanities. Students learn how to analyze, and to reach informed conclusions about other people, their culture, and the scientific forces of the environment.

Mississsauga's top Ontario scholar is Rick Hansen Secondary School student Abhinav Malhotra, who graduated with a 99.2 per cent average. Malhotra will study engineering at the University of Toronto.

The top scholar at Mayfield Secondary School in Caledon is Jenna Mielzynski, who graduated with an average of 96.2 per cent. Mielzynski will head to Rollins College in Florida this fall to study biochemistry on an academic scholarship.
