Peel board approves selection of 20 proposed schools for full-day early learning program
On Nov. 24, 2009, the Peel District School Board approved the selection of 20 proposed schools for implementation of the full-day early learning program, contingent on final approval by the Ministry of Education. Boards are required to submit a list of proposed schools to the ministry by November 30, 2009. Proposed sites will be reviewed and expected to be approved by the Ministry in mid-January 2010.
"This is just the beginning of an important program that we know will enrich the lives of the children in Peel," noted Janet McDougald, chair of the board. "This is a key initiative for the education of young children and will help them with school readiness. We will be able to make a critical difference for the families we serve."
Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board full-day early learning program registration will take place at the same time regular kindergarten registration occurs in February 2010. Parents will be informed that flexible boundary applications to access the early learning program will not be approved.
School boards selected proposed schools based on the following ministry guidelines: available space, local needs—based on Social Risk Index data—and the impact on existing local child care.
The board will provide an updated list of ministry-approved schools to staff, parents and the community. The Peel board will begin to phase in full-day learning for four- and five-year-olds in September 2010.
